For my second go at making a coffee table from pallet wood I decided to give the chevron pattern a try. The increased number of angle cuts and measuring made it take longer, but I think it adds a lot if character. I made this Industrial Chevron Pallet Coffee Table, and think it came out great!

I had some challenges with fitting some of the pallet boards as they’re not always straight. First, I cut a piece of plywood to the size I wanted. Next, I cut and dry-fitted the boards onto the plywood, adjusting as needed for the natural imperfections of pallet wood. Once I had all the pieces laid out, I glued and nailed them to the plywood, and trimmed it in 1×2″ boards that I mitered at the corners. Then the sanding marathon began. I started with 60 grit, then 120 grit and finished with 220 grit. Used 1″ pipe for legs which I sprayed white and painted the trim white too. I applied four coats of varnish to give the wood some protection and added style. I think the table turned out nice! It’s 20″ tall x 26″ wide x 50″ long. Also, has anyone found a varnish/poly that is low odor and doesn’t smell like chemicals once the project is done? Any input on this issue would be great!!!
Editor’s note (and from personal experience) You can try Pure Color Inc’s line of non-VOC stains and low-VOC polyurethanes. They’re an extremely low odor, and non-toxic to kids and pets. They work great!
