If your anything like me, my chisels and gouges are always at the bottom of my tool drawer and I can never find the right one. To solve this, I constructed a simple chisel organizer/stand using pallet scraps.
Take a long section of a pallet, drill some holes make some cuts and voila a carving chisel stand. Let see more in details the step-by-step instructions:
- Look in your scrap bin for discarded pallet offcuts. I had a length comprising 3 blocks and two boards.
- Measure the diameter of the chisel shaft, mine were 8mm; measure the diameter of the chisel handles, mine were 20mm. From this, I calculated the diameter of the retaining slot and the spacing between chisels.
- Mark out on the board your spacing, I measured 20mm from the long edge and drew a line parallel to the board edge. I then marked at 30mm intervals along the line. By chance this allowed me to mount 12 chisels between pallet blocks.
- Drill a 10mm hole on the 30 mm marks.
- Using a miter square, mark lines from the edge to each side of the holes.
- Use a saw to cut a slot from the edge to the hole.
- Sand and finish in your preferred way.
