Diy - Pallet Planter Box

In order to embellish my terrace, I made this planter with recycled wooden pallets. We will see in this tutorial how easy it is to make a planter with a pallet.

Material, equipment & tools needed:

• Two wooden pallets
• Face mask
• Glasses
• Gloves
• Sanding Tool
• Hammer
• Measuring Tape
• Nails
• Handsaw or Chop-saw
• Knife
• Pliers
• Pencil
• and Paint of your choice

Dismantling the pallets

First, we will dismantle the pallets with 2 hammers. The aim is to reuse the nails that are present on the pallets. You can see several techniques to disassemble a pallet in this article.

Redwood or cedar pallets are usually the best options to build a planter. They have better longevity because these woods are naturally rot-proof and are known to last up to 20 years. They are also beautiful.

Measurement

Let's start by measuring the length, width, and height of the place where you want to put the planter.

3D Model

Based on the measurements made previously, we will first assemble the two short sides. Then we will assemble the two long sides and join all the sides together.

Once all the sides are ready, we will paint the parallel pallet boards in grey, and the feet in black. Of course, you can use any color you like.

Then we will add the potting mix to the planter.

Sanding the pallet planks

After disassembling the pallet, let's start by sanding the boards to give them a pleasant and smooth texture.

Wood Cutting

Once the boards are sanded, with your magical and super fast hands, you will cut all the wooden blocks and set them aside.

Building The Box

Sides

We'll start by assembling the two identical short sides. The two feet that we will put on the sides will hold the 3 inner planks firmly together.

Front

Next, we will assemble the two longer sides.

The planter won't move from its position. So there's no need to add boards to the bottom of the box. However, if you want to move it, we advise you to add boards at the bottom of the planter.

Joining The Sides

Once all sides are ready, we'll bring them all together. For a little more stability, we need to add metal support to hold the sides together.

Painting

That's it, that's all there is to do with the nails and the hammer, the assembly is finished. We're going to paint the outside of the planter.

My friend had the idea to draw boundaries between the wooden planks and frankly, with a little more effort, the planter is now even prettier.

Lining The Box

Before putting the soil in the box, I add a geotextile to hold the soil and prolong the life of the planter.

If you don't have a geotextile, you can use a black garbage bag. These bags are an easy and inexpensive alternative to floor liners.

If the bag is too large or has a lot of extra length for your wooden planter, you can cut the extra length with scissors. Place the bag in the pot to check how much of the bag you need to dispose of.

Adding Potting Mix

The pallet planter is almost finished. Now all I have to do is fill it with soil. Remember, don't overfill it and make sure you keep the soil at least a few inches below the level of the liner.

Voila, that's it, now you can plant whatever you want in your planter.
