Frustrated by the poor quality of wooden pots on offer at our hardware store, the aim was to create something not only practical but elegant with no nails or glue which makes the work even more satisfying.
To start the project, cut timbers (I only used the planks of the pallet) to 380mm long. My planks were then given dimensions of 85mm at the top of each timber and 68mm at the bottom so that each piece forms a wedge (in this design 18 pieces are used).
When cutting the wedge the saw blade is set to 10°. This way, when two pieces are placed together, the angle is 20°. Do this to all the pieces 18 X 20 = 360° to make the full circle.
To assemble the tricky bit, lay half your piece out on a flat bench so the edges abut. masking tape them together and they should be able to stand upright to form half the circle. Do the same with the other half and then tape the two halves together (a friend can help at this stage).
Take a piece of fencing wire and wrap it around the middle of the pot, you can twist it at this stage to tighten the wire or if you have the facilities, measure the wire and weld it into a continuous loop. Whichever method knocks the wire with a hammer up the pot to tighten the wedges. Repeat for the top and bottom wire. Staples or small screws under the wire to keep it in place.
Glue some slats together to form the base. Place the pot over the base and trace around the inside. Remove the pot and cut the base out with a jigsaw making it a couple of mm’s bigger all round. Finally, drill a hole in the center and drop the base in.
If the pot is to be used directly which mine are then I coat the inside with bitumen paint and let it dry. Handles decorations could easily be added at any stage. Good luck and I hope you find this useful.
